The Concord stagecoach, manufactured by the Abbot Downing Company in Concord, New Hampshire, became an icon of 19th-century American transportation. Its rugged, functional design made it a mainstay of Western roads, immortalized in cowboy tales and classic Westerns.

Concord stagecoaches were distinguished by their unique thoroughbraces, which absorbed the shocks of hostile terrain and offered relative comfort compared to European spring suspension. Accommodating up to nine passengers on three often cramped bench seats, and sometimes others on the roof, they also carried trunks and mail bags, often overloaded.

This gave rise to the expression "riding shotgun", referring to the armed guard sitting beside the coachman to protect the cargo.
